What Started It All – Tarte Amazonian Clay Smooth Operator Tinted Moisturizer in Agent 06

What do apple fruit extract, lemon fruit extract, orange fruit extract, camellia extract, ginseng root extract, ginkgo biloba root extract, sodium hyaluronate, vitamin C, A and E and amazonian clay all have in common? They’re all in Tarte Tinted Moisturizer!

Tarte TM was the first time I tried something that was beyond your run of the mill cosmetic for your face, and after trying many other things, I keep coming back to this. (Those other things would include Lancome Idol, Nuance Perfecting Flawless Foundation, Sonia Kashuk Perfecting Luminous Foundation, Physician’s Formula Tinted Moisturizer, and more).

I loved it from first application. It gives your skin a pleasant tingly sensation – it must be all that citrus. It was by using this product I discovered the miracle of Vitamin C for direct application to trouble spots (it brightens and events skin tone, heals acne, what DOESN’T Vitamin C do?), I started making my own Vitamin C masks for really troublesome skin days. I was amazed.

After 6 weeks of using this product, my skin was clearer than it has been since I was 17, and that includes the years where I wore no makeup at all or used any skincare products. Am I claiming that Tarte TM can help clear acne? Yes! It absolutely has helped clear acne for me. Along with the healing properties of Vitamin C, the amazonian clay balances either oily or dry skin (I have oily), and you may have heard clay helps draw out impurities.

That’s why I consider products like Tarte TM to be such a paradox, and to fill such a need in the market place. Most people think of makeup as cosmetic only, and I’ve heard girls say, “I don’t wear anything on my face. It’s just bad for you.”

Well that depends on what you’re using. Tarte’s products cross the line between makeup and skincare products. This product is my favorite, and if I run out, my skin feels oily, irritated, out of control. Tarte TM has a calming, invigorating affect on my skin, and I love it.

That’s why, even though I’m a bargain hunter, I think this product is worth every bit of $36 for the 1.7 oz. It fulfills so many rolls. (Did I mention it’s anti-aging as well?) And if you use it sparingly, it lasts a really long time. (Now that I know I love it, I am waiting for those crazy Tarte holiday sales! By the time you apply the discount, this product might end up costing me not much more than a tiny bottle of drug store brand foundation or beauty balm per ounce – remember that most TMs and foundations are sold in 1 oz bottles, not 1.7 oz bottles. This includes both drugstore and high end brands).

Even without a discount, this product costs $21 per ounce. When compared with many other high end brands, that’s almost half the price.

Oh and in the picture I’m wearing the product alone without a primer, concealer or foundation so you can get a sense of the type of coverage it offers. I am wearing a bit of creme blush, and Tarte’s micronized clay powder, but neither of those affect the coverage.

In the second picture I added later, the one with the burgundy and grey sleeve, I am wearing no primer or foundation. But I am wearing concealer, the same finishing powder, and a cream blush.

  1. I currently use a tinted moisturiser by Clinique. And although I love it, I like trying new products. So this looks like a great candidate for when I run out. Thanks for sharing. It looks gorgeous on you!

  2. Thank you! I always feel self conscious without full coverage on so I appreciate that. 🙂 But I wanted people to see what it looked like.

  3. Luna, I don’t really have a recipe yet but I hope to develop one. Right now I just crush vitamin C and mix it with water and keep it on for a short time (5-10 min or until it feels too strong). It’s strong. I want to make it more skinfriendly and more able to get into the pores but that’s what I’ve done so far. If I make a recipe I will definitely share!

  4. I actually like the texture and glide of tarte foundations. I have swatched myself with several. But the shades I fit the best still weren’t good matches for me. But it did feel nice on my skin. I need more olivey tones.
